Coventry and Warwickshire’s talented athletes have been given a head start in their quest to achieve sporting excellence.

A total of 24 young sports stars from across Coventry and Warwickshire have been awarded a total of more than £15,000 to help them achieve their sporting ambitions.

The athletes included seven from Coventry, five from Warwick District, two from Stratford, two from Rugby, one from North Warwickshire and six from Nuneaton and Bedworth.

The bursaries were awarded during a special event held at St Mary’s Guildhall, in Coventry. Now in its second year, CAP is a bursary scheme that provides support to talented athletes within Coventry and Warwickshire.

The scheme is funded and supported by;

·         Warwickshire County Council,

·         Coventry City Council,

·         Warwick District Council,

·         Coventry & Warwickshire 2012 Partnership

·         Rugby Borough Council,

·         North Warwickshire Borough Council,

·         Stratford-on-Avon District Council,

·         Coventry Sport Trust

·         DC Leisure Management Limited

·         CSW Sport

One athlete delighted with his bursary was Jamie Blundell, from Coventry, he said: “This type of funding makes a big difference.

“One of the most important things it can help us with is the cost of travel when we need to get to competitions that are not local.

“It can also help with the cost of accommodation, if we can get down to an event the day before it helps us to prepare much better.”

As well as the bursaries, the young athletes were presented with specially branded hooded tops courtesy of Alex Newman, Director of promotional products and badge company, Recognition Express.

The athletes were presented with their awards by England and Great Britain hockey player Rachel Walker, a recent Beijing Olympian. The event was also attended by Coventry Lord Mayor Cllr Jack Harrison who congratulated the young athletes on their success.

Vanessa Brown, director of CSW Sport, said: “These bursaries underline our commitment to supporting and developing the region’s young and talented athletes.’’

“As we know the area has a very proud sporting heritage and we are confident that today’s young athletes can add to this in the future.’’

“We are delighted to see so many up and coming stars being produced locally and we are sure there will be even more over the coming years.”
