London 2012 Games

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games provide a once in a lifetime opportunity for Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire to join in and be part of the biggest sporting events in the World.

2012 will be a special year for our sub-region through being selected as one of only 6 UK venues to host the London 2012 Olympic Football competition at the City of Coventry Stadium.

Through playing our part in the biggest sporting events in the world, our region will come alive in 2012 and welcome the world, providing a unique opportunity to showcase our sporting and cultural heritage and raise the profile of our sub-region nationally and  internationally, generating huge economic benefits and a strong sense of civic pride  across all communities as the city takes its place on the international stage. No other region outside London will be the focus of so much Olympic related activity through:

  1. Hosting Olympic Football at the Ricoh Arena, (to be renamed the City of Coventry Stadium for the Games) 

  2. Hosting the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay with an evening celebration event in Coventry on the 1 July 2012 

  3. Hosting world-class athletes and visiting teams as training camps at the University of Warwick 

  4. Celebrating national and international collaborations through the World Shakespeare Festival, part of the London 2012 Festival led by the Royal Shakespeare Company 

  5. Staging community events and screening the 2012 Games live on the London 2012 Live Site, a big screen in Millennium Place, Coventry City Centre 

  6. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the consecration of Coventry Cathedral - a key event in the city's history, and one which will also attract national and international interest 

  7. Showcasing the very best of Coventry's creativity through Godiva Awakes, the West Midlands winner of the Legacy Trusts Artists Taking the Lead Cultural Olympiad project 

  8. Enabling local communities to be inspired by London 2012 through the Community Games toolkit and Coventry Community Games Fund 

  9. Looking and Feeling like an Olympic host City through the London 2012 Look and Feel street dressing programme 

  10. Welcoming 250,000 visitors to the City, showcasing our World Class tourism destinations and Iconic landmarks
